Fall 2025 SSGA Candidates

Björn Ostling - Candidate for President

Hey, my name is Björn and I'm running for President. I moved here from Seattle in January, and I'm studying mariculture. Someday I'd like to have my own kelp/shellfish farm here in Southeast. The student government has a massive budget, and I'd like to see that money used to empower students to gain experience in their fields and to take better advantage of everything Sitka has to offer. Sitka is rich in opportunities, and a few simple amenities could make a huge difference in students lives. Crew licenses for students, bikes and additions to the University weight room are some of the things I have in mind. I'd also like to see student government push for better living conditions here in Sitka. Improving the kitchen at SFAC is a short term solution (which I intend to pursue), but I'm going to lobby the university to find a more livable housing solution outside SFAC.

Phoebe Pepper - Candidate for President

My name is Phoebe Pepper. While I was raised in Oklahoma, I have lived in Sitka for 3 years, and have been involved at UAS Sitka since the start. Originally a dual enrollment student, I am now a full time student on campus studying English and Political Science. I served as VP for SSGA last year, and I strive to continue my projects of campus improvement such as a student lounge, free feminine hygiene products, and an accessible/affordable vending machine. I find deep meaning in helping students connect to resources, and want to use SSGA's funds to nurture a welcoming environment for all students, on campus or off.

Jeremiah Murphy - Candidate for Secretary

Hi everyone! I’m Jeremiah. I just moved to Sitka with my family. We’ve lived in Anchorage, North Carolina, New Mexico and a few other places. I’ve been a stay at home Dad and I’m excited to be in the Aquaculture program as I transition back to the workforce. I’d like to run for Secretary so I can help students enjoy their time at UAS—especially if students have kiddos to look after. I also want to make sure everyone has bicycle helmets.

Gwendolyn Aaberg - Candidate for Public Relations Officer

Hello! I'm Gwendolyn Aaberg, and I’m originally from a rural village in the Bristol Bay region. This is my second year living in Sitka, and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the UAS community! Last fall, I completed the Aquaculture Semester, and that led me to pursue a degree in Applied Fisheries.

I've been involved in student government since my very first semester, first as a Representative, and then as Treasurer. This experience has helped me understand how important student leadership is in creating a positive, supportive campus environment.

I'm running for Public Relations Officer because I’m passionate about bringing students together. Coming from a small, tight-knit community, I know how powerful connection and communication can be. I want to help promote events, create eye-catching flyers, and use social media to keep everyone informed and excited about what’s happening on campus!

When I’m not in class, you’ll usually find me outside! I love hiking, fishing, and spending time on the water. Being connected to the outdoors is a big part of who I am, and I hope to bring that same energy and connection to our student community.

Shelby Snow - Candidate for Public Relations Officer

Hi everyone! My name is Shelby Snow, and I am a Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation major coming from Minnesota to UAS for the Aquaculture semester. I am passionate about sustainability, education, and reciprocity, and I hope to utilize these passions to foster positive community engagement in both UAS and Sitka. Some of my hobbies include hiking, camping, fishing, photography, and videography. I also have experience working with different editing software and content creation in professional settings. I am interested in the Public Relations position because I believe this is where I can be most effective in serving UAS, given my experience in the required responsibilities. My goals for SSGA include finding creative solutions to issues such as transportation and housing for students, sponsoring fun educational outings, engaging in conversations with staff, students, and community members about areas of concern and potential improvements, and having a strong emphasis on ways to give back to the community and environment.
