About the Center for Excellence in Learning & Teaching (CELT)
The Center for Excellence in Learning & Teaching (CELT) at UAS supports faculty in creating engaging, accessible, and inclusive learning environments. We offer workshops, consultations, and resources to help faculty explore new teaching strategies, integrate technology effectively, and enhance student learning. While CELT is not a technical helpdesk, we are always happy to connect you with the right people or provide guidance when possible. Our goal is to be a hub for collaboration, creativity, and continuous growth in teaching and learning at UAS.
Frequently Asked Questions about CELT
When is CELT open?
CELT staff typically work during regular UAS business hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, especially during holidays and the summer. We know that some of you work outside of those hours and occasionally we can schedule meetings outside these hours when given time to plan.
If you need immediate help outside of our typical office hours, you may find answers by using one of the following resources:
Who can use CELT’s services?
CELT serves UAS faculty, instructors, and staff who support teaching and learning. That is essentially all UAS employees! Any employee is welcome to ask questions about pedagogy or educational technology and to attend our events.
What is the best way to contact CELT?
Our general email, uas.celt@alaska.edu, is monitored by our faculty liaison and CELT staff. Instructional designers can also be reached directly by email or phone: find our info on the CELT Contact page. Our phone lines are not always staffed and we are often in meetings, so email may be the fastest way to get a response. We are happy to set up an appointment for a phone or Zoom call if that is your preference.
What kinds of support does CELT provide?
Workshops on teaching strategies, course design, accessibility, and educational technologies
Individual consultations for course planning or redesign
Guidance on educational technology, the LMS, and other teaching tools. We may loop in the appropriate UAS IT services personnel for more technical support when needed.
Resources on accessibility, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and inclusive practices
Can CELT fix technical problems in Blackboard or other systems?
CELT can help with course setup, best practices, and pedagogical use of Blackboard Ultra. For technical issues requiring system administration (such as password resets, system outages, or software errors), we can connect you with the appropriate IT support.
Does CELT provide captioning or document remediation services?
CELT provides guidance on creating accessible course materials and can connect you with campus resources. We support automated captioning through Screenpal and can assist with more complex accessibility needs. For the best support, please contact us as early as possible when planning your course materials. Faculty are responsible for ensuring course materials meet ADA standards, and CELT is here to partner with you in that process.
Where can I find the CELT workshop schedule?
Workshop and event schedules are posted on the CELT website and on UAS Connect.
Can I present a CELT workshop?
We are always looking for workshop suggestions and presenters; if you are interested in seeing a topic or presenting on a topic, please reach out to us via email. Presenters will receive a certificate that they can use for their tenure and promotion files.
