Starting Fall 2026, all undergraduate students, including those from outside Alaska, will automatically receive in-state tuition. No extra steps or forms required. Once you begin, we guarantee the resident tuition rate for as long as you remain continuously enrolled. All students taking undergraduate classes at UAS are eligible for in-state tuition, regardless of residency.
Alaska Unlocked begins with the Fall 2026 semester. Students starting Summer 2026 or earlier will be charged under the current tuition structure until Fall.
Nothing. Once you apply and are admitted to UAS, you will automatically have the in-state tuition rate applied to your account - no extra forms or applications required.
You can find the most up-to-date tuition rates on our Cost of Attendance page. Please note that tuition for each academic year is typically set by the University of Alaska Board of Regents during the fall prior to the start of the school year. For Fall 2026, the rates will be set in November 2025. Rates may change from year to year.
Note: tuition at UAS is determined by course level. All classes designated as lower-division (000-299) or upper-division courses (300-499) are eligible for in-state tuition. Courses designated as Graduate level (600-699) are not eligible for Alaska Unlocked.

Yes! Receiving in-state tuition does not affect your eligibility for scholarships or other forms of financial aid. We recommend that all students apply for financial aid to maximize affordability and reduce out-of-pocket costs. Combining in-state tuition with financial aid and scholarships can make your education at UAS even more accessible and affordable.
Yes. Whether you take classes in-person or online, all students taking undergraduate classes at UAS will receive the in-state tuition rate, regardless of residency.
Yes. If you began your undergraduate studies at UAS before Fall 2026 and were paying non-resident or WUE tuition, your tuition will automatically change to the in-state rate starting Fall 2026. No additional steps are required.
Note: this will not affect your state residency. If you would like to work toward Alaska residency, you may. You may also maintain residency in your home state.
Yes. As long as you stay continuously enrolled at UAS (excluding summers), you will remain eligible for in-state tuition, even if you don’t become an Alaska resident.
If you take a break from UAS and are not continuously enrolled (excluding summers), you may lose your eligibility for Alaska Unlocked. Note: for the purposes of Alaska Unlocked, the university defines continuous enrollment as taking at least one credit per semester. Please see the UAS Catalog for information about returning to UAS after an absence. Should you have to reapply for admission after an absence, you may be subject to current tuition policies at the time of reentry.
No. While your eligibility for in-state tuition is guaranteed as long as you remain continuously enrolled at UAS, the actual dollar amount of tuition is subject to change each academic year, as it is for all students. Tuition rates are set annually by the University of Alaska Board of Regents.
No. Establishing residency in the state of Alaska is a separate process dictated by the State of Alaska. If you would like to work toward Alaska residency while enrolled at UAS, you may. You may also maintain residency in your home state. For more information about establishing Alaska residency, please visit the State of Alaska website.
Alaska Unlocked only applies to tuition. Student fees, housing and other costs are not affected by this change.
No. Starting Fall 2026, all students – including UAA and UAF students – will be charged the in-state tuition rate for any UAS undergraduate course they take. This applies whether the course is taken online or on campus.
UAS students taking classes at UAA or UAF will be charged the tuition rate set by the campus offering the course. This means UAA courses follow UAA tuition rates, and UAF courses follow UAF tuition rates– even if you are a UAS student. UAS students receiving in-state tuition at UAS through Alaska Unlocked may still be subject to non-resident tuition rates at UAA and UAF.
