UAS Campus Views
Campus recreation believes that UAS has the best views of any college campus. The REC Center has installed several HD/4K cameras to show our campus’ unique location, nestled between the Inside Passage and the Juneau ice field, providing an unmatched playground for outdoor enthusiasts.
EagleCam
Above is a live view from our EagleCam, mounted on top of a cellular tower in Auke Bay. This Verkada PTZ camera can capture a large area with exceptional details using wide-angle 360-degree pan, 220-degree tilt, and up to 32x optical zoom. Thanks to the generosity of American Tower, we were able to place this camera for optimal viewing.
This versatile camera will show several views throughout the year. During the early spring and summer you’re likely to see a pair of North American Bald Eagles raising their young. Eagles mate for life and continue to use the same nest for many years. The first year this pair was observed was the summer of 2024. Outside of nesting season, this camera will have great views of Auke Bay, Mendenhall Towers, and will be able to scan the sky at night looking for the aurora borealis.
Below is a journal of significant items to occur in this years nesting season. Some of these items will have been captured on video and added to the video and photo playlist below.
- March 1, 2026: The start of eagle nesting season in Alaska.
- March 6, 2026: EagleCam was installed on top of cellular tower. Eagle nesting season is anytime between March 1st through April 15th in Alaska. American Tower's bird watching division gave us an extension past March 1st so long as the eagle pair had not started nesting.
- March 8, 2026: Eagle pair begin to visit the nest on a regular basis. Either separately or together.
- March 31, 2026: Cloacal kiss (eagle's mating) captured on video, see playlist link below.
- April 1, 2026-Present: Pair continue to bring nesting material to nest. Although not always in the nest, one of the pair always seem to be in the area keeping an eye on the nest.
- April 7, 2026: Eagles have been observed both in the nest and in the vicinity of the nest. Nesting behaviors were observed as well as "playfull" behavior. Videos are included in the YouTube Playlist below or by going to EagleCam Youtube playlist.
- April 11-12, 2026: Eagles spent the weekend with lots of time in the nest with extended periods compared to previous visits. On Sunday a salmon fish tale was delivered to the nest where it sat till Monday morning. See our 2026 YouTube playlist for the video.
- April 20, 2026: Male eagle flew into the nest with a chicken legs and thigh, likley from a near by coop. Female soon follows and quickly lays over the carcus, eating most of the kill and leaving only the feet for the male. View this video on our 2026 YouTube playlist.

Visit our 2025 Playlist when the camera was mounted on the REC Center and zoomed into the nest. This was the first season these eagles were recorded. The 2025 nesting season started with three eggs and resulted with two eagles flying from the nest.
Auke Lake Live View
Above is a live view of Auke Lake from the UAS dock. Average lake temperatures in the summer run in the low 50’s in April/May to the high 60’s in July/August. View current weather and air conditions for Auke Bay.
Auke Lake is a gateway to kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, and fishing in the summer with x-country skiing and ice skating in the winter. The Auke Lake Trail offers a great break between classes with a trail that allows you to leave campus and return via. a loop trail with lots of scenic outlooks along the way. While the Auke Lake Camera serves the purpose of keeping an eye on our watercraft in the summer, it is also a great way for Alumni and former students to get their “Auke Lake Fix
