Indigenous Languages (MAT IL)
This Master of Arts in Teaching in Indigenous Languages (MAT IL) Program prepares fluent speakers and advanced learners of Alaska Native languages to become fully licensed PreK-12 teachers while advancing language revitalization throughout Alaska. Designed for working educators and community language leaders, this innovative online program allows students to remain in their home communities while completing coursework and clinical experiences in partnership with local schools and districts. Through culturally responsive teacher preparation grounded in Indigenous knowledge, language revitalization, and evidence-based instructional practices, graduates are prepared to earn Alaska teacher certification and help cultivate the next generation of Indigenous language speakers and educators.

Complete and Submit the Following
- Complete Graduate Application and pay fee
- Send Official Transcripts with 3.0 GPA to UAS. Please note: transcripts from UAA, UAF, or UAS are not required to be submitted
- Send Official Basic Competency Exam scores
- Complete Student Information Sheet
- Submit Writing Sample per these MAT IL writing sample guidelines
- Submit Professional Dispositions Reference Contact Information: As part of the online program application, submit contact information for one reference who is familiar with your work and performance and can address your professional dispositions (a former or current professor, employer, or supervisor who is not related to you).
- Submit Language Fluency Evaluation Reference Contact Information: As part of the online program application, submit contact information for one reference who is familiar with your language knowledge and abilities and can evaluate your language fluency (a former or current professor, employer, supervisor, fluent speaker, language educator, Elder, or another individual who is not related to you).
- Language Proficiency Verification: Applicants must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the language they intend to teach. This is satisfied by a verification of adequate college-level coursework in the language, or by a verified fluency exemption. Please contact your advisor for a transcript evaluation and or to arrange an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) with a fluent speaker.
